John Gaskell Planning Consultants was established in 2005 after John left a major Queensland consultancy firm to start his own planning practice.

John Gaskell has over sixteen years experience in the planning profession, ranging across a number of development assessment and strategic planning roles. In particular, John has experience in senior positions in both the private and public sector.

John’s ten years of local government provides an excellent background for many of his planning projects.

John is a respected senior planner in the planning profession who brings a strong client focus to every project. John also brings a team focus and an ability to work with people to support the organisational goals and/or project objectives in each case.

John also brings leadership and communication skills, having lead and facilitated numerous public meetings, and addressed different Shire or City Councils across the State.

Strategic Planning

John has lead and contributed to a wide range of strategic planning projects. In particular John contributed to strategic direction for Brisbane City from his authorship on the City Plan.

In addition, John has lead or had major contributions to strategic planning projects at Townsville / Thuringowa and Rockhampton City.

John has also contributed to strategic planning projects focused on particular policy issues such as affordable housing, industrial development, community facilities, scenic amenity, water sensitive urban design (WSUD) and sustainability.

Planning Scheme Drafting

John has extensive experience in drafting planning schemes. In particular he is one of the authors of the Brisbane City Plan, and the Rockhampton City Plan.

In addition he has contributed to planning scheme preparation in Livingstone Shire, Mackay City, and Whitsunday Shire.

John has recently prepared the commercial provisions for the proposed Rochedale Local Plan (Brisbane City).

Local Planning

John’s local planning experience is based in the preparation of Local Area Plans for Brisbane City, a multi disciplinary program which he helped establish in the mid 1990’s.

In addition John has carried out a range of local planning projects as a consultant in Caloundra City, Logan City, Brisbane City, Livingstone Shire and Mackay City.

Development Assessment

John has had local government development assessment experience in Brisbane City Council.

John has continued high level development assessment roles in the private sector for a range of small and large scale commercial, community use, industrial and residential developments in Brisbane (eg Newstead Riverpark, Moreton Bay College, Westfield Toombul extensions, Regatta Towers, Inn on the Park).

John has a strong role in day to day development assessment processes in a range of local authorities across the State.

Planning and Environment Court Appeals

John has provided expert witness reports and presented evidence for a range of appeals including the presentation of evidence at Court.

In addition John has participated in alternative dispute resolution processes.

He continues to provide evidence in a range of appeals for local governments or applicants.

Urban Design

John brings a strong urban design focus to all his work. John has contributed to a number of urban design studies including the Yeppoon Building Heights and Town Centre Study (Livingstone Shire Council) and the Rochedale Local Plan Commercial Provisions.

In addition John’s urban design focus has been apparent in many of his planning scheme drafting processes which are focused on natural and built form outcomes.
